Home / Services / Marine laser cleaning

Marine laser cleaning in Devon & Cornwall.

Corrosion and failed coatings removed from metal hulls, keels, sterngear and deck hardware, in the boatyard or marina where the vessel is already hauled out. No grit blasting, no wet stripping, and debris captured at the nozzle.

What we clean

Metal work on and around the vessel.

We work on metal surfaces only. Laser cleaning prepares steel, aluminium and bronze for inspection, repair or recoating, and reaches into pitting and weld seams that are slow to clean by hand.

  • Steel and aluminium hull plating and welds
  • Keels, keel bolts and ballast castings
  • Propellers, shafts, rudders and sterngear
  • Davits, stanchions, winches and rails
  • Anchors, chain and mooring hardware
  • Engine beds, tanks and steelwork in the bilge, where access allows

Suitable materials

Metals found on working and leisure vessels.

Steel

Hull plate, frames, keels and fabricated fittings. Rust, mill scale and coatings removed ready for priming.

Aluminium

Hulls, masts and spars. Lower settings are used on aluminium to avoid marking or overheating thin sections.

Bronze, brass & stainless

Propellers, seacocks, fittings and rails. Tarnish and deposits removed while keeping the original surface.

We do not laser clean gel coat, GRP or timber hulls. If your vessel has metal fittings on a GRP hull, we can clean those components once they are removed or safely isolated.

Our approach

Tested, controlled and recorded on every vessel.

Step 01

Survey

We review photos or visit the yard to understand the metal, the coating stack and the condition underneath.

Step 02

Test area

A small area is cleaned first so you can see the finish and we can confirm settings and a realistic rate.

Step 03

Clean

Work is carried out inside a controlled laser area, with extraction running at the head throughout.

Step 04

Hand back

The surface is left dry and ready for your primer, inspection or repair, with settings and photos recorded.

Precautions

What we manage on a marine job.

Antifoul & hazardous coatings

Old antifouling and some primers contain copper, tin or lead compounds. Removed material and used filters are bagged and disposed of as hazardous waste where required.

Yard rules

We work to your boatyard or marina rules, including screening, permits and any limits on working hours or areas.

Heat on thin sections

Thin plate and aluminium are cleaned at reduced energy and in short passes to keep heat input low.

Flash rust

Freshly cleaned steel will begin to oxidise in damp air, so we agree timings with whoever is priming.

Laser safety

A barriered controlled area is set up around the work and only authorised people enter while the laser is active.

Fuel and vapours

We check for fuel, gas and flammable vapours before work starts near tanks, engines or enclosed spaces.

Service coverage

Boatyards, marinas and harbours across the region.

We are based in Malborough near Kingsbridge, close to Salcombe, Dartmouth and Plymouth, and travel to yards and harbours throughout Devon and Cornwall. Travel within the region is included in the quote.

Common questions

Do you laser clean gel coat or GRP?

No. Our marine work is on metal only. We can clean metal fittings from GRP boats.

Does the boat need to be out of the water?

For hull and sterngear work, yes. Deck hardware and fittings can often be cleaned afloat, depending on the marina.

Will laser cleaning damage the hull plate?

Not when settings are correct. We confirm settings on a test area first, and material loss is typically measured in microns.

How to enquire

Tell us about the vessel.

Send the vessel type, hull material, the area to be cleaned and where it is lying, with a few photographs if you can. We will reply with our recommended approach and a clear quote.
